Today, 48 years ago, on October 1, 1977 (August 19, 1977) the World Vegetarian Day was established by the North American Vegetarian Association in 1977 as World Vegetarian Day. In 1978, the International Vegetarian Union endorsed this proposal, ¡°to promote the possibility of vegetarianism for joy, compassion and longevity.¡± It brought attention to the humanitarian advantages of ethics, environment, health, and a vegetarian lifestyle.
