On this day, 230 years ago, on July 16, 1795 (June 1, 1795, the second Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Davis, was born. Sir Davis, Bt, KCB, FRS(SirJohn Francis Davis, July 16, 1795-November 13, 1890), also translated as Davis, Derby and Davis. British sinologist who traveled to China in his early years and served as the East India Company's Taipan in Guangzhou and the British government's commercial director in China. In 1844, he succeeded Peter Pottinger as the second Governor of Hong Kong, but he collected taxes for the first time in his term. The heavy tax caused great loss of popularity, and he resigned in 1848. Davis was born in London on July 16, 1795, to a father named Samuel Davis, who worked for the East India Company. After graduating from Hertford College, Oxford University, he arrived in Guangzhou, China in 1813 at the age of 18 and was hired as a scribe by the East India Company. Davis has language and diplomatic talents and likes China literature. During his tenure in the company, he translated a large number of China literary works into English. As a result, he became a "China hand" of the company and was particularly valued. In addition to being assigned to accompany Lord Amersted to Beijing in 1816 to seek an appointment with Emperor Jiaqing, he was also selected as the chairman of the company's special committee in Guangzhou in 1832, taking charge of the company's trade business in China. In addition, Davis was one of the founding members of the Royal Asian Society when it was founded in 1824. In 1833, the British Parliament passed a bill terminating the East India Company's patent rights for trade with China, abolishing the original special committee, establishing a new commercial director in China, and changing it to be accountable to the government. Davis became the last senior class of the East India Company in China. Subsequently, Lord Lawbaugh, the first commercial director in China, arrived in China on July 15, 1834 to take up his new duties and work in Macau, and immediately appointed Davis as deputy commercial director in China. However, not long after, Lulaobei broke into Guangzhou without authorization, triggering the "Lulaobei Incident" and finally died of illness in Macau on October 11 of the same year. So the position of commercial director in China was replaced by Davis.
