On this day, 54 years ago, on August 28, 1971 (July 8, 1971, the lunar calendar), Taiwan launched a movement to "protect the Diaoyu Islands". Hong Kong students demonstrated in 1971, China students studying in the United States and students on Taiwan launched a patriotic movement to defend the sovereignty of the motherland's territory, the Diaoyu Islands. Since August 1970, the United States has privately made a deal with Japan to return the disputed Diaoyu Islands between China and Japan to Japan as part of the Ryukyu Islands it trusts. Japan plans to explore and extract oil on the island. The news aroused great anger among China students studying in the United States and patriotic students on the island of Taiwan. They established "Diaoyu Protection Committees" one after another to hold demonstrations across the United States and on the island to protest against the actions of the United States and Japan.
