On this day, 32 years ago, on October 3, 1993 (August 18, 1993, the lunar calendar), a major accident occurred in Xiaoshan where the river tide swept away tide watchers. At noon on October 3, 1993, at a tide-viewing point in Xiaoshan City, Zhejiang Province, a serious accident occurred in which people watching the Qianjiang tide were swept away by the high tide. As of 5 pm on the 4th, 19 people had died, 27 people were being rescued in the hospital, and 40 people were missing. At about 12:20 on October 3, a crowd of tide watchers spontaneously gathered at the non-tide viewing point in the reclamation area of Xiaoshan City on the Qiantang River. Some tide watchers venture to climb the dam that stretches into the river, are swept into the river by the sudden tide of the Qian River, or rush to the rubble piles next to the embankment. After the accident, Hangzhou City and Xiaoshan City immediately organized public security police officers and local cadres and the masses to carry out salvage and rescue operations. Li Zemin, secretary of the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee, called overnight after hearing the news, demanding that we should promptly find the person who fell into the water, rescue the injured, and strengthen security along the Qiantang River. Li Jinming, secretary of the Hangzhou Municipal Party Committee, immediately rushed to the scene of the accident, worked with local party and government leaders to study and implement salvage measures, and deployed public security police officers and rural militiamen along the river to carry out safety precautions.
