Vermeer was not known during his lifetime, but his works will not be forgotten. In 1866 he was rediscovered by French commentator Thor. In Vermeer's life, Delft had a discriminatory attitude towards his creation. But shortly after his death, generations of wealthy collectors interested in painting believed that Vermeer's work had always been of great value. This is reflected in the fact that whenever any of his few works is released, it will immediately attract praise and be priced at a high price. Somehow, however, Vermeer's name was not included in the collection of paintings compiled by Arnold Haubracken, an 18th-century manual on the basics of Dutch artists. As a result, some 150 years after his death, Vermeer remains a controversial artist.
