41 years ago today, on December 20, 1984 (October 28, 1984, the lunar calendar), Deng Xiaoping said that the experience of resolving the Hong Kong issue applies to Taiwan. On December 20, 1984, when Deng Xiaoping, director of the Advisory Commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, met with Bao Yugang, chairman of the Hong Kong Global Shipping Group, in the Fujian Hall of the Great Hall of the People, he said,"If the experience of solving the Hong Kong issue is used in Taiwan, it will be beneficial to everyone and to the United States." He said,"The issue between China and the United States is still a Taiwan issue. The Sino-British Joint Statement on the Hong Kong Question has removed the shadow between China and the UK. Once the Taiwan issue is resolved, the shadow between China and the United States will also be eliminated." Deng Xiaoping emphasized,"The Hong Kong issue has been solved. This is a solid reality." Bao Yugang was invited to Beijing to attend the official signing ceremony of the Sino-British Joint Statement on the Hong Kong Question. Bao Yugang is from Ningbo, Zhejiang. He told Deng Xiaoping that he had recently visited Ningbo and that he had not returned to his hometown in Ningbo for 40 years. He went on to put forward many suggestions for the construction of Ningbo. Deng Xiaoping said with a smile,"You are very enthusiastic." Deng Xiaoping expressed appreciation for Bao Yugang for doing many things for the motherland. After the meeting, Deng Xiaoping hosted a luncheon in honor of Bao Yugang and his family.
