Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On October 16, 1988, the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider successfully collided
On this day, 37 years ago, on October 16, 1988 (September 6, 1988, the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider successfully collided. Beijing Electron-Positron Collider At 5:56 a.m. on October 16, 1988, my country's first high-energy accelerator, the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider, successfully collided for the first time. This is another major breakthrough achievement in the high-tech field after my country successfully exploded atomic bombs and hydrogen bombs and the launch of artificial satellites. The Beijing Electron-Positron Collider is a high-tech project decided and constructed by the Party Central Committee and the State Council. It includes four main components: electron injector, storage ring, detector and data processing center, and synchrotron radiation area. It is a complex system engineering consisting of hundreds of kinds and tens of thousands of high-precision and sophisticated special equipment. Its completion and successful collision have opened up broad prospects for my country's applied research on particle physics and synchrotron radiation, and opened a new chapter in my country's high-energy physics research. This is considered to be the largest scientific research project in the history of science and technology in China. Comrade Deng Xiaoping broke ground on October 7, 1984. Over the past four years, under the effective organization and command of the Beijing Electron Positron Collider Project Leading Group entrusted by the Party Central Committee and the State Council, the Institute of High Energy Physics of China Academy of Sciences, together with more than 10 central ministries and commissions and hundreds of affiliated factories, research institutes, and colleges and universities, nearly 10,000 scientific and technological personnel, workers, cadres, and officers and soldiers of the People's Liberation Army, have carried forward the spirit of self-confidence, self-reliance, and self-reliance, fully absorbed the world's advanced technology, were self-reliant, worked hard, tenaciously, and overcome numerous difficulties. It has successfully completed the tasks of self-design, development, production, installation and debugging, creating miracles of fast construction speed, saving investment, good quality and high level. Professor Li Zhengdao, who came to Beijing to attend the China-US High-Energy Cooperation Conference, said that the successful collision at the Beijing electron-positron collider is a major event in the international high-energy physics community. Such a complex high-tech project was completed in just 4 years, which is rare internationally. It can successfully collide in one go, which shows that the quality of various equipment and components, and the level of installation and debugging of the collider are also first-class in the world. According to relevant sources from China Academy of Sciences, the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider will be built into a national laboratory open to the outside world in the future. Based on its characteristics of both particle physics and synchrotron radiation application research, it will become a cross-department and cross-disciplinary joint experimental research base. At present, experts from the Institute of High Energy Physics are continuing to conduct debugging and prepare for physical experiments in order to continuously improve the stability of various equipment, enable brightness and other indicators to meet design requirements as soon as possible, and make meaningful physical experiments.
