July 21, 1944: US troops landed on Guam, Japan
On this day, 81 years ago, July 21, 1944 (June 2, 1944 in the lunar calendar), the U.S. military landed in two sections on the west coast of Guam. US landing forces launched an assault on Guam's beachhead. On July 21, 1944, US troops landed on two sections on the west bank of Guam. The U.S. military has invested in the 3rd Marine Division, the temporary 1st Marine Brigade and the 77th Army Division, totaling approximately 55,000 people. The Japanese army defending Guam consisted of approximately 20810 people, including the 29th Division of the Army, the 48th Independent Mixed Brigade, the 10th Independent Mixed Wing, the 52nd Antiaircraft Gun Group, and the 54th Navy Garrison. The Battle of Guam lasted until August 12 of the same year. The last Japanese position was captured, but the remaining scattered Japanese troops did not finally surrender until September 1945. In the Battle of Guam Landing, 18560 Japanese soldiers were killed and the rest were captured; 1435 American soldiers were killed and 5648 were injured.
