Yunnan Qin Bamboo Slips Found on December 29, 1975
Fifty years ago today, on December 29, 1975 (November 27, 1975 in the lunar calendar), Yunmeng Qin slips were discovered. On December 29, 1975, archaeologists completed the excavation of Tomb No. 11, one of the large number of Qin Dynasty bamboo slips, unearthed in Shuihudi, Yunmeng, Hubei. This batch of Qin slips, which were discovered for the first time, is called "Yunmeng Qin slips", and has a total of 1155 pieces (and dozens of fragments). The bamboo slips are 23.1-27.8 cm long and 0.5-0.8 cm wide. The Jian Wen is similar to the Qin Li ink script of Xiao Zhuan, and most of it is clearly recognizable. Its period ranged from the first year of King Zhao of Qin Dynasty (306 BC) to the 30th year of Qin Shi Huang (217 BC). After being compiled and edited by the bamboo slips sorting team, the contents are "Chronicle","Yu Shu","Eighteen Types of Qin Laws","Xiao Law","Qin Law Miscellaneous Copy","Legal Questions","Feng Diagnosis Style","The Way to Be an Official" and "Rishu". Except for the two before and after, the five in the middle are all records of the Qin laws, legal texts, and the procedures of prison management documents. The discovery of these Qin bamboo slips provides us with rich and systematic original data for studying the politics, economy, culture, military, especially the legal system from the Qin Dynasty to the Qin Dynasty in the late Warring States Period.
