On this day, 39 years ago, on October 7, 1986 (September 4, 1986, the first nursing home for mentally retarded children in Beijing opened. On October 7, 1986, a private social education service institution, Beijing Xinyun Nursing Home for Mentally Disabled Children, officially opened. Nursing homes use new textbooks written by psychological experts to provide early intervention (training, education, treatment) for mentally retarded children to maximize their potential. A survey provided by the Institute of Psychology of China Academy of Sciences shows that my country's mentally retarded population accounts for about 3.4¡ë of the total population. At present, my country's mentally retarded education is still in the pioneering stage. For example, Beijing City has opened more than 80 mentally retarded classes and accepted more than 900 students, but it is far from meeting the needs of society. Xinyun Nursing Home is an institution under the China Mental Health Association. It will rely on scientific and social forces to conduct systematic research and experiments on the education, rehabilitation and future employment placement of mentally retarded children.
