Breaking-News >> TodayHistory The UN General Assembly resolution on November 20, 1980 called for the immediate withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan
On this day, 45 years ago, November 20, 1980 (October 13, 1980 in the lunar calendar), the United Nations General Assembly resolution required the immediate withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. On the morning of November 20, 1980, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution calling for the immediate withdrawal of foreign troops. The draft resolution was jointly proposed by Pakistan and 41 other countries. The countries upholding justice united and cooperated during four days of fierce debate, thwarted various obstacles and plots of the Soviet Union, and finally allowed the resolution to be passed with 111 votes in favor, 22 votes against, and 12 abstentions. The number of countries voting in favor this time was seven more than when the Special General Assembly adopted a similar resolution in January of this year. The resolution expresses serious concern about the continued invasion of Afghanistan by foreign troops and the increasing number of Afghan refugees. The resolution reaffirms the right of the Afghan people to determine their own form of government and choose their own economic, political and social systems without any form of external interference, subversion, suppression or restraint. The resolution emphasizes that safeguarding Afghanistan's sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence and non-aligned nature is indispensable for a peaceful settlement of the Afghan issue. The resolution calls on all parties concerned to work towards a political solution and create the necessary conditions for Afghan refugees to voluntarily return to their homes in safety and without humiliation.
