On this day, 116 years ago, August 12, 1909 (June 27, 1909 in the lunar calendar), plant pathologist and agricultural educator Chen Shanming was born. Chen Shanming was born on August 12, 1909 in an intellectual family in Beijing, with his ancestral home in Tianjin. His father, Chen Baoquan, was the president of Beijing Normal University (predecessor of Beijing Normal University). He graduated from the High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University in 1926 and was admitted to Nankai University Preparatory Course. He was admitted to Tsinghua University in 1927 and graduated in 1931. He stayed in the school as an assistant to Li Jidong in the Department of Biology. Under the guidance of Professor Li Jidong, he was engaged in research on the development and physiology of ginkgo fruits. Later, he taught at National Beijing Normal University and worked part-time at the Jingsheng Biological Survey Institute. In 1936, he entered the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Minnesota to pursue a degree. Under the guidance of Professor Starkman, he was engaged in pathological research on wheat Rhizoctonia. Engaged in research on the genetic variation of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in fruit trees, obtained his doctorate in 1943 and obtained honorary membership of Sigma-Xi. In 1944, Chen Shanming suddenly received a phone call from Professor Zou Bingwen from Washington, urging him to return home immediately. Chen Shanming gave up the invitation to work at the Florida State University experimental station and resolutely returned to China. Employed by the Central Agricultural Experimental Institute, Ren Jizheng. Hosted the work of the pest and insect pest research laboratory, was responsible for the work plan and arrangement of the whole room, and conducted research on sorghum smut. In 1956, the China Academy of Agricultural Sciences was established. Chen Shanming was appointed as a researcher and deputy director of the Institute of Plant Protection. In addition to his duties, he was committed to the research of wheat stripe rust. Since 1982, we have successively carried out weak domestic research projects such as genetic and physiological research on rust, cell selection of plant disease-resistant variants, and biological control of soil-borne diseases. On this basis, a plant disease biotechnology research group was formally established. Chen Shanming has successively served as executive director, vice chairman and consultant of China Plant Pathology Society; executive director and consultant of China Plant Protection Society; editor-in-chief of "Journal of Plant Protection"; deputy editor-in-chief of "Journal of Plant Protection" and "Journal of Plant Pathology"; Member of the Academic Degree Approval Committee of China Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
