28 December 1944 Hungarian Provisional Government declares war on Germany
Eighty-one years ago today, on December 28th, 1944 (November 14th, 1944 in the lunar calendar), the Hungarian Provisional Government declared war on Germany. On December 28, 1944, the Hungarian Provisional Government declared war on Germany. After the outbreak of World War II, Hungary, headed by Horthy, entered the war as a servant country of fascism. By the autumn of 1944, the Soviet Red Army had formed the opening momentum of a victorious offensive across the board on the Soviet-German battlefield, and launched a campaign against Budapest in early October. Horthy's government declared an armistice with the Soviet army in the event of military defeat. However, the fascist "Arrow Cross Regiment" headed by Salohi launched a coup, overthrew Horthy and continued to fight on the German side. Hungarian anti-fascist forces took active actions and established an interim government composed of representatives of left-wing political parties headed by General Miklos Darnocki on December 21. On December 28 of the same year, the interim government declared war on Germany and cooperated with the Soviet army to attack Budapest. By February 1945, the Soviet army liberated Hungary.
