Date of entry into force of the Schengen Agreement of 22 December 1994

On December 22, 1994, the “Schengen Agreement” determined the date of entry into force.

On December 22, 1994, the Executive Committee of the Schengen Agreement decided in Bonn that the agreement would come into effect from March 26, 1995.

At that time, seven of the nine signatories of the Schengen Agreement, namely France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal, will abolish internal border controls and implement the free movement of personnel. Italy and Greece, because they are not yet prepared in terms of information technology, decide to join later on the request of France.
