On September 8, 1945, American broadcaster Tokyo Rose was arrested
On this day, 80 years ago, September 8, 1945 (August 3, 1945 in the lunar calendar), the American broadcaster Tokyo Rose was arrested. Tokyo Rose is quite famous for those American soldiers who miss their hometown and are surrounded by malaria and jungles in the South Pacific, and are isolated from the world. She broadcast them affectionate, mesmerizing homesickness programs, asking the G.I. to desert. However, her appeal had little impact on the morale of the U.S. military. Now the 29-year-old Rose, born in Los Angeles and also known as Ija Taugli, was arrested in Yokohama and will be brought here for trial. She came to Japan in 1941 to "see her sick aunt" and was arrested on her way to Pearl Harbor. She was later recruited to do radio propaganda work for Tokyo.
