The United Nations adopted the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide on December 9, 1948
On this day, 77 years ago, December 9, 1948 (November 9, 1948 in the lunar calendar), the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. On December 9, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, which entered into force on January 12, 1951. There are 19 articles in the full text. The Convention stipulates that the intentional elimination, in whole or in part, of a national, racial or religious group is the crime of genocide; such acts, as well as premeditating or inciting genocide, whether occurring in peacetime or wartime, are crimes under international law and should be prevented and punished. Each State Party must enact the necessary legislation to ensure the implementation of this Convention.
