On June 20, 1991, Kuwait shipped its first batch of crude oil for export
On this day, 34 years ago, June 20, 1991 (May 9, 1991 in the lunar calendar), after the Gulf War: Kuwait shipped its first batch of crude oil for export. A Kuwait oil vessel carrying 60,000 tons of crude oil left Ahmed Port for Japan on June 20, 1991. This is the first batch of crude oil exported from Kuwait since the outbreak of the Gulf crisis. Egypt's Middle East News quoted Kuwait Oil Minister Hamoud Abdullah Raqba as saying that Kuwait will strive to fully resume oil exports before the end of 1991. Since Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in August 1990, Kuwait has exported approximately 1.5 million barrels of crude oil per day, but its current daily production is only 30,000 barrels. Due to the destruction of most oil facilities during the Iraq occupation and the fire in more than 600 oil wells, Kuwait is not yet able to fully resume oil exports. Lakba said fires in 168 oil wells have been extinguished so far, but 500 oil wells are still burning. Eight fire-fighting teams from the United States and Canada are currently working in Kuwait, and by mid-August, another eight fire-fighting teams have gone to Kuwait. China, Iran, Britain, France, the Soviet Union and Romania will send fire fighting teams to Kuwait to participate in the fire fighting.
