On this day, 33 years ago, on May 23, 1992 (April 21, 1992 in the lunar calendar), the "Green News" Conference adopted the "Belo Horizonte Declaration." On May 23, 1992, the "Green News" conference jointly organized by the International Journalists Organization, the National Association of Journalists of Brazil and the Union of Professional Journalists of Minas Gerais State adopted the "Belo Horizonte Declaration." The declaration emphasized that journalists from all over the world should make new efforts to further improve and improve reporting on environment and development issues. The meeting started on the 20th and ended on the 24th. Nearly 800 representatives from 27 countries including China, the United States, Brazil, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico, Peru, and Colombia attended the meeting. During the meeting, representatives had a heated discussion on the role that journalists should play in strengthening environmental education, resisting consumption methods that waste resources, and exposing bad habits that harm the environment. In addition, they also expressed their views on how to improve journalists and news media reporting on environment and development issues. The declaration emphasized that third world countries should be encouraged to independently develop journalism in order to get rid of their dependence on the culture, science and news of developed countries. The declaration calls for in-depth discussions among journalists around the world on the formulation of news, environment and development ethics laws and related corresponding measures; and calls for the establishment of the World Environmental News Network and an ecological information news agency independent of governments and private institutions. The Belo Horizonte Declaration also requires the United Nations and its regional organizations to hold special meetings on the role of journalists on environment and development issues, establish news networks, and promote exchanges among journalists from various countries and access to information on all environmental and development issues.
