96 years ago today, on September 5, 1929 (August 3, 1929 in the lunar calendar), Shanghai Sassoon Building was completed. Sassoon Building is a 10-story building (partially 13 floors) built at No. 20 on the Bund (Nanjing intersection) from 1926 to 1929 with an investment of 2.4 million yuan by Chinachem Real Estate Company, a subsidiary of British-owned New Sassoon Foreign Company. It is the tallest building on the Bund, with a construction area of 36,317 square meters. In 1872, Elias Sassoon, a British Jew, founded the New Sassoon Foreign Company in Bombay. In 1877, he set up a branch in Shanghai and bought the real estate (11 acres and 7 cents) of Qiongji Foreign Company, an American businessman at No.20 on the Bund. The demolition of the old house began in April 1926, and the new building was completed on September 5, 1929. The building's architectural style is Art Deco movement, and its 19-meter-high dark green pyramid-shaped copper top has become another prominent symbol of the Bund for many years. The designer was the famous Gonghe Foreign Company. The Chinachem Hotel, the top luxury hotel in Shanghai at that time, was opened in the west hall on the ground floor and the 4th-9th floor of the building, with 9 national-style guest rooms. The ground floor East Hall is leased to ABN Amro and Warby Bank, and the top floor is Sassoon's own luxurious residence. After the Anti-Japanese War, the building was acquired by Kong Xiangxi's Shanxi Yuhua Bank. In 1952, the new government took over the building. Opened as the Peace Hotel in 1956. In 1965, after the original Huizhong Hotel at No.19 on the Bund was merged, it was called the North Building (No.20 on the Bund) and the South Building (No.19 on the Bund) of Peace Hotel respectively. In 1992, the World Hotel Organization listed Peace Hotel as a world famous hotel.
