On this day, 28 years ago, June 20, 1997 (May 16, 1997, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Agenda for Development. The 51st session of the General Assembly held a plenary meeting on June 20, 1997 and adopted the Agenda for Development. The Agenda says that development is one of the priorities of the United Nations and aims to improve the living standards of people of all countries. Economic development, social development and environmental protection are interdependent and complement each other in sustainable development. The Programme states that sustained economic growth is vital for all countries. The economic and social development of developing countries, in particular, was crucial. Only by achieving sustainable development would countries be able to raise the living standards of their people, eradicate poverty, hunger, disease and illiteracy, ensure employment for all and protect the environment. After the adoption of the Agenda, Malaysian Ambassador to the United Nations Razali, President of the current session of the General Assembly, said that the Agenda is a concrete embodiment of the efforts made by the United Nations to achieve common solutions to development issues, but it must be implemented and successful. It requires the joint efforts of all member states and the international community. Wang Xuexian, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, said at the conference on the 20th that the adoption of the "Program" is a major event for the United Nations. Although the adoption of the "Program" does not mean that the relevant goals have been achieved. But it is the first step towards achieving the goals. The more important task for the international community in the future is to fully implement the Programme, rather than selectively implement certain provisions based on the interpretations of individual countries. He emphasized that major developed countries should show sincerity, fulfill their commitments to implementing the Programme, and turn the Programme into reality. Rather than letting the "Program" become a dead letter.
