General elections were held in Cambodia on May 23, 1993
On this day, 32 years ago, May 23, 1993 (April 3, 1993, the lunar calendar), Cambodia held a general election. Yasushi Akashi, Chairman of the UNTAC Agency, which oversees Cambodia's general election, visited voters participating in the election at the election station. According to the provisions of the Paris Peace Agreement on Cambodia, the first multi-party election since 1972 was held across Cambodia from May 23 to 28, 1993. 4.2 million of the 4.7 million voters cast their ballots under the protection of armed men from the United Nations Interim Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC). Twenty political parties, including Ranariddh's Funcinpec Party and Phnom Penh's Cambodia People's Party participated in the election. The Democratic People's Republic of Cambodia boycotted the election on the grounds that the Paris Agreement had not been fully implemented and the election did not have the neutral political environment it deserved. On June 10, Yasushi Akashi, Chairman of the Joint Commission for Cambodia, announced the results of Cambodia's general election at a meeting of the Supreme National Council of Cambodia, saying that there were 4.011 million valid votes counted nationwide. The Funcinpec Party accounted for 45.47% of the votes; the People's Party accounted for 38.22%; The Liberal Democratic Buddhist Party received 3.81% of the vote; the Khmer National Liberation Movement for Freedom Party received 1.3%. The Funcinpec Party, which received the most votes in the Cambodian general election, won 58 of the 120 seats in the Cambodian Constitutional Assembly, the People's Party won 51 seats, the Liberal Democratic Buddhist Party led by Song Shuang won 10 seats, and the Khmer National Liberation Movement for Freedom won 1 seat. Hun Sen, a representative of the People's Party, said at the meeting that the People's Party does not recognize the election results announced by the UNTAC, but will appoint members to participate in the formulation of a new constitution with members of other political parties.
