Image: Kurt Waldheim, renowned diplomat, United Nations Fourth Secretary-General (1972-1982), Austrian Foreign Minister, President (1986-1992). He valued the role of personal diplomacy, and during his tenure had established close personal contacts with the heads of most countries and governments of 158 member states at the time. He regardedining world peace and human well-being as the United Nations' primary mission,ining balance between big and small nations, promoting the Southern Dialogue, andining people's trust in the United Nations.
