Breaking-News >> TodayHistory August 19, 1942 Allied commandos failed to attack Dieppe
On this day, 83 years ago, on August 19, 1942 (July 8, 1942 in the lunar calendar), the Allied commandos failed to attack Dieppe. The beach in Dieppe is littered with the bodies of Canadian soldiers and the wreckage of a transport ship August 19, 1942. Thousands of Canadian soldiers lost their lives or were captured during a brave and exploratory Allied offensive on Dieppe on the French coast. The operation was intended to attack German military installations and test the possibility of an Allied attack on France. But the troops soon learned that attacking France would not be easy. About 6,000 soldiers in landing craft made it ashore before dawn after avoiding German minefields. Many soldiers were killed as soon as they arrived at six target areas on the beach. After suppressing enemy fire, the surviving soldiers drove the tanks they had brought to the center of Dieppe. They engaged in fierce battles with the enemy around a casino. The Royal Air Force and the German Air Force began to engage in the air, and each side lost more than 90 aircraft. More Canadian soldiers have been killed as they trudged back to landing craft on the coast. The Allies expected large casualties in this battle. They had warned the French resistance in advance not to participate. This battle was not an all-out offensive, and it was not worth taking such risks.
