On November 15, 1994, a fire in Jilin destroyed 70 million years old dinosaur fossils

On November 15, 1994 (the 13th of the tenth lunar month), a fire in Jilin destroyed dinosaur fossils 70 million years ago.

At about 1 a.m. on November 15, 1994, a major disaster occurred in the Yindu nightclub in Jilin City. The museum building with a total construction area of 14600 square meters was burned down, resulting in a direct economic loss of 6.71 million yuan. A 70 million year-old dinosaur fossil that was 11 meters long and 6.5 meters high was wiped out in the fire. The world's largest surviving precious meteorite "Jilin-1" also died in the flames. More than 97,000 books and cultural relics of the Ming and Qing Dynasties that cannot be counted clearly were also burned. Two people were killed in the fire, resulting in the largest fire in the history of Jilin City.

At 1:45 a.m. that day, the Jilin City Fire Brigade received an alarm. At 1:49, the Hengshan Road Squadron arrived at the scene. At this time, the Yindu Nightclub was already full of smoke and flames, breaking through the roof of the building and spreading to the city museums and libraries on the north and south sides of the nightclub. Flames burst out of the windows on the second floor of the museum, with a burning area of more than 1000 square meters. The raging flames swept towards the library on the north side along the stuffy roof and the passage on the second floor.

The on-site commander decisively formed three combat teams to forcibly break through the locked nightclub door. He first rescued a female waitress who had been choked by smoke about 30 meters away from the door, and then rescued more than ten people on the north and south sides of the main hall.

At 2:02, all full-time fire brigades of public security, enterprises and institutions in Jilin City arrived at the scene. 16 fire squadrons, 48 fire engines, and 293 firefighters were involved in the fierce fire-fighting battle.

At about 2 o'clock, the roof of the nightclub collapsed.

After the fire brigade worked hard, the fire was finally put out at around 4:30. According to the fire department, a total of 15 trapped people were rescued, more than 7400 square meters of museum buildings were saved, and nearly one million books such as city library collections and periodicals were also preserved.
