June 27, 1954 The Soviet Union's first atomic power station generated electricity

On June 27, 1954 (the 27th fifth month of the lunar calendar), the Soviet Union's first atomic power station generated electricity.

The Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union issued the following communiqué on the start of power generation at the Soviet Union's first atomic energy industrial power station:

Soviet scientists and engineers have successfully completed the design and construction of the Soviet Union's first atomic energy industrial power station, which has a usable generating capacity of 5,000 kilowatts. On June 27, 1954, the atomic power station began generating electricity, transmitting the first current to industry and agriculture in nearby areas.

This is the first time that atomic energy-the splitting of uranium nuclei-has been used to run industrial turbines without burning coal or other fuels.

With the start of generating electricity from atomic power stations, a big step forward in the application of atomic energy for peaceful purposes has been taken.

Soviet scientists and engineers are designing atomic energy industrial power stations with a generating capacity of 50,000 to 100,000 kilowatts.
