Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On October 8, 1843, the Qing government signed the Humen Treaty with Britain
On this day, 182 years ago, on October 8, 1843 (August 15, 1843 in the lunar calendar), the Qing government signed the Humen Treaty with the United Kingdom. On October 8, 1843, Qi Ying, the imperial envoy of the Qing government, and Pu Dingcha, the British envoy, signed the "Humen Treaty" in Humen, Guangdong as an annex to the "Treaty of Nanjing." The "Humen Treaty" was originally called the Sino-British "Five-Port Trade Agreement Attached to Aftermath Provisions", and also known as the "List of Aftermath Matters Attached to Aftermath Peace Treaty." There are 13 models in total, with 3 models of the "Boat Regulations" attached. The main contents: 1. One-sided most-favored-nation treatment. China "has new Enshi and other countries, and should allow the British to benefit equally." 2. Allow the British to rent land in five people to build houses for permanent residence. Later, the United Kingdom interpreted this and forced the Qing government to demarcate a "concession" in Shanghai in 1845. Various countries followed suit and established aggressive strongholds at treaty ports. On the same day, Britain forced the Qing government to formally conclude the "Five-Port Trade Regulations" in Humen, which had been promulgated and implemented on July 22, as part of the "Humen Treaty." Its main contents are as follows: 1. It clearly stipulates a unified five-point tax rate, which affirms that no matter what kind of goods, the value will be 500 per cent. 2. The consular jurisdiction stipulates that "when the British and the Chinese negotiate and sue, and how the British will be punished, the British shall agree on the charter and laws and issue them to the steward to follow." China's independent judicial sovereignty has been seriously damaged. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/1gsn.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.27-14:12] 访问:78
