Woodrow Wilson In the 1912 presidential election, the competition between Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft divided the Republican vote and was elected president as a Democrat. In 1883, Woodrow Wilson entered graduate school at Johns Hopkins University and received a doctorate in history and political science three years later. His doctoral thesis is "Congressional Government: A Study in American Politics." After graduation, he held academic positions at Bryn Mawr College (1885-1888) and Wesleyan University (1888-1890). He was the only U.S. president to hold the title of Doctor of Philosophy (except for the Doctor of Laws), and the only U.S. president to have previously held public office in New Jersey. Honors received Wilson won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919 for advocating the League of Nations. In 1924, he was appointed president of the American Historical Society, becoming one of only two presidents in American history to hold this office. The other was Theodore Roosevelt (1912). On February 3, 1924, Wilson died of illness at his home on S Street. He was buried at the National Cathedral in Washington. He is the only U.S. president buried here. On December 28, 1961, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, located near the DC, was opened. In 1962, historians ranked 31 presidents, with Wilson ranking among the top four, second only to George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt. The National Trust for Historic Preservation converted the house where Wilson lived into a museum dedicated to Wilson's former residence, which opened to the public in 1964. The museum was listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1964. It was included in the National Register of Historical Places in 1966.
