On this day, 44 years ago, on June 6, 1981 (May 5, 1981, the lunar calendar), Yuan Longping won my country's first special invention award. At the award ceremony, Yuan Longping (left) accepted the award on behalf of all scientific and technological personnel engaged in hybrid rice research. On June 6, 1981, Yuan Longping, a Chinese rice breeding expert, won the first special invention award in China. Yuan Longping graduated from the Department of Agriculture of Southwest Agricultural College in 1953. He has served as a researcher of Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, professor of Southwest Agricultural College and director of Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center. He was also elected as a member of the Standing Committee of the Sixth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Since the 1960s, Professor Yuan has devoted himself to the research of hybrid rice breeding and has successively bred new excellent hybrid rice varieties such as Nanyou 2. After large-scale promotion, the yield increased by about 20%. This is another major breakthrough after dwarf breeding in the history of rice breeding in my country. In the 10 years from 1976 to 1987, a total of 1.05 billion acres of hybrid rice cultivated by Yuan Longping were planted across the country, making a great contribution to the increase in rice production and income in my country. To this end, Yuan Longping won my country's first special invention award in 1981. In 1987, he won the UNESCO Science Award and enjoys the title of "Father of Hybrid Rice" at home and abroad.
