On September 27, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi signed the "Joint Communique between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Kiribati on the Restoration of Diplomatic Relations" with President and Foreign Minister Ma Mao of the Republic of Kiribati at the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations in New York. The two countries resumed diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level today. The main contents are as follows: The People's Republic of China and the Republic of Kiribati, in accordance with the interests and wishes of the two peoples, hereby decide to resume diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level immediately. The two governments agreed to develop friendly relations between the two countries on the basis of the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence. The government of the Republic of Kiribati recognizes that there is only one China in the world, that the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legal government representing all of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The government of the Republic of Kiribati immediately severed "diplomatic relations" with Taiwan and promised not to have any official relations or conduct any official exchanges with Taiwan.
