Breaking-News >> TodayHistory Dutch pathologist Christian Aikman was born on August 11, 1858
167 years ago today, August 11, 1858 (July 3, 1858 in the lunar calendar), Dutch pathologist Christian Aikman was born. Christian Eijkman (August 11, 1858-November 5, 1930) was born in the Netherlands in 1858. After graduating from the University of Amsterdam, he worked as a military doctor in Indonesia, and later retired due to malaria. In 1886, he returned to Java, Indonesia, established a laboratory and continued research on beriberi. He found that the cause of beriberi was not caused by bacteria, but due to a lack of vitamin B1. This discovery won him the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1929. He died in 1930. Aikman worked as a military doctor in Indonesia before retiring from the military due to malaria. After retiring, in order to understand the cause of his malaria, he went to Germany to study and went to Dr. Koch to study bacteriology. At that time, beriberi was prevalent in Southeast Asian countries. The Dutch government believed that it was caused by bacteria, so it sent a beriberi investigation team to Indonesia. Aikman participated in the work as an assistant and stayed in the area to continue the research. There, he found that if chickens only ate white rice, they would develop severe symptoms of beri, but if chickens were allowed to eat grain mixed with bran, the symptoms of beri could be alleviated. So he divided the prisoners in the prison into two groups to conduct experiments. One group only ate polished white rice, and the other group ate brown rice. As a result, the proportion of prisoners in the group who ate white rice suffering from beriberi was much higher than that in the other group. Based on this discovery, he denied the theory that beriberi is caused by bacteria. Aikman pursued the victory and further proved through experiments that brown rice and bran were effective on chicken polyneuritis. In 1929, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for this discovery.
