October 13, 1962 Panama Canal Bridge was completed
On this day, 63 years ago, on October 13, 1962 (September 15, 1962 in the lunar calendar), the Panama Canal Bridge was completed. On October 13, 1962, when the U.S. -occupied Panama Yunhe District held a dedication ceremony for the newly built Panama Canal Bridge, a group of young Panamanians broke through the police blockade and planted a Panamanian flag in the center of the bridge. Panamanian protesters demanded that the bridge be named the "Bridge of the Americas" and demanded the restoration of Panama's sovereignty over the Yunhe District. Panamanian demonstrators chanting anti-American slogans and carrying placards poured into the venue, forcing the bridge's inauguration ceremony to end hastily. Those present at the time were Panamanian President Roberto Chiari, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Powell, U.S. Ambassador Farland and others. When Powell talked about raising both the American flag and the Panamanian flag at the same time in the Panama Yunhe District during the inauguration ceremony, the crowd shouted anti-American slogans. Panama has a reputation as a bridge to the world.
