On this day, 191 years ago, August 2, 1834 (June 27, 1834 in the lunar calendar), Bartholdi, French sculptor and author of the American Statue of Liberty, was born. Frederick August Bartholdi was born on August 2, 1834 in Alsace, France. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (August 2, 1834-October 4, 1904) was a French sculptor and author of the famous Statue of Liberty in New York, USA. Bartholdi studied architecture and painting in Paris. The Statue of Liberty was given to the United States by France, Britain's old enemy, because the United States gained independence from Britain. Bartholdi is said to have modeled the Statue of Liberty after his mother's face. The French architect Eifel, who designed the Eiffel Tower, designed the internal support iron frame and the entire support structure. In order to house the statue, Bartholdi personally went to the United States to choose a location. Americans raised funds to build the tower. The entire bronze statue was divided into 350 pieces, packed in 214 boxes and shipped to the United States. The prototype was erected on the banks of the Seine River in Paris opposite the Eiffel Tower. His other works include the huge "Lion of Balfour" carved on Mount Belfour on the border of Alsace and Switzerland to commemorate the victory of the Franco-Prussian War; the statue "Swiss Aid Strasbourg" given to Basel, Switzerland by Strasbourg, in gratitude for its aid from Switzerland during the Franco-Prussian War; the Bartoldi Fountain in Bartoldi Park in Washington; The statue of Lafayette in Union Square in New York; the "Four Horn Angels" in Boston Church; and the Bartholdi Fountain in Fertile Place in Lyon, France.
