On October 8, 2015 (August 26, 2015 in the lunar calendar), my country first discovered natural metallic uranium in nature. Natural Metal Uranium Science and Technology Daily, Beijing, October 8, 2015 (Reporter Chen Yu) The latest issue of the Journal of Geology (English version) published a cover article introducing that Chinese researchers have discovered metallic uranium in nature for the first time. This discovery not only provides a key basis for revealing the nature of hydrothermal uranium mineralization, but also is of great significance for studying the source of uranium and the formation and evolution of earth heat. Uranium is the cornerstone of nuclear military industry and an important nuclear energy raw material. Due to its instability and variable valence, it has long been believed that there is no metallic uranium in nature. The current industrial metallic uranium series is also prepared by the calcium (magnesium) metallothermal reduction method of uranium tetrafluoride (UF4). Fortunately, China researchers broke this restriction that has bound mankind for many years and first discovered metallic uranium in nature. According to the Science and Technology Daily, the research team led by Li Ziying, president of the Beijing Institute of Geology of the Nuclear Industry, used photoelectric spectroscopy to systematically study the composition and valence state of pitchblende in typical hydrothermal uranium deposits in my country, and found that uranium in pitchblende not only exists in tetravalent and hexavalent forms, but also exists in the form of metallic uranium (zero-valent). The pitchblende samples studied this time were collected from the famous Guidong 330 uranium deposit and Zhuguang 302 uranium deposit in my country. Both deposits occur in northern Guangdong Province and belong to the important Nanling uranium metallogenic belt. The discovery was published in the latest issue of the authoritative journal "Acta Geologica (English Edition)". The article believes that natural metallic uranium not only provides a key basis for revealing the nature of hydrothermal uranium mineralization, but also for studying the source of uranium, the formation and evolution of earth heat are of great significance. Data show that metallic uranium and uranium dioxide can be put into reactor use as long as they are made into fuel rods or fuel blocks (i.e. fuel elements) of a certain size and shape as required. Considering that my country has been able to increase the utilization rate of uranium to more than 90%, the next research on controllable nuclear fusion and even infinite energy is very imaginative.
