When the French army invaded the border between Yunnan and Guangxi in 1884, it participated in the Anti-Japanese War with the regiments of the four prefectures of Gao, Lei, Qin and Qian in Guangdong. In February of the following year, he was requested by Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Guangdong and Guangxi, and served as the deputy military affairs officer outside the Guangxi Pass, actively deploying war readiness. In late 2003, he led Wang Jiaoqi, Wang Debang, Su Yuanchun and other troops to defeat the French army at Zhennanguan (now Youyi Pass), and took advantage of the victory to pursue and successively recovered Wenyuan, Lang Son and other places, fundamentally reversing the situation of the Sino-French War. Later, he served successively as Minister of Military Affairs of Guangxi and Governor of Guizhou. He died with the posthumous title of Yong Yi.
