Britain forcibly rents Weihaiwei

In the first half of 1898 (the 24th year of Guangxu), after Russia forcibly rented Lushun and Dalian, the United Kingdom pretended to boycott Russia and proposed to the Qing government that it must lease Weihaiwei in Shandong on the same terms. On July 1, 1898, the Qing government's representatives, Prince Yi, Prince Qing, Minister of Punishment Liao Shouheng, and British Minister to China Ogner signed this agreement in Beijing. The main contents are:

Leasing Weihai and nearby waters and within 10 miles of the entire bay coast to the United Kingdom for the same term as the Russian leasing brigade, which is 25 years;

The leased land is under British jurisdiction, and the British can station troops here for fortification;

China's military ships can berth at Weihaiwei in wartime and peacetime.

The signing of the treaty made it easy for Britain to obtain an important military base in northern China. Coupled with Russia's forced leasing of the Bohai Bay, control of the Bohai Bay completely fell into the hands of imperialist countries.

Comments: The base of the Beiyang Fleet was taken away by Britain just like this. The Qing government was too corrupt

Keywords: July 1, 1898, Weihaiwei, Britain, forced rent
