On August 25, 2005 (July 21, 2005 in the lunar calendar), Hurricane Katrina hit the United States. Hurricane Katrina was a Category 5 hurricane that appeared in August 2005. It caused severe damage in New Orleans, USA, killing more than 1200 people, making it the most severe hurricane on the United States since 1928. On August 25, 2005, the hurricane made landfall in Florida, United States, and at dawn on August 29, it made landfall again off the coast of New Orleans on the U.S. Gulf Coast with winds of 233 kilometers per hour. It took more than 12 hours to make landfall before weakening into a severe tropical storm. The entire disaster area is almost the same as the land area of the United Kingdom and is considered to be one of the most costly natural disasters in American history.
