On this day, 86 years ago, June 12, 1939 (April 25, 1939, the Pingjiang Massacre occurred. On the afternoon of June 12, 1939, the General Command of the 26th Group Army of the Kuomintang Yang Sen stationed in Hunan and Hubei sent troops to surround the Pingjiang Communications Office of the New Fourth Army in Jiayi, Pingjiang, Hunan, and killed Tu Zhengkun, a member of the New Fourth Army, and Wu Xianzhong, secretary of the Communications Office. In the middle of the night, four people, including Luo Ziming, major adjutant of the Eighth Route Army, Wu Yuan, secretary of the Communications Department, Zeng Jinsheng, major secretary of the New Fourth Army Headquarters, and his family member Zhao Luying, were buried alive in Huangjin Cave. This tragedy aroused public outrage among the people in the anti-Japanese base areas and Kuomintang ruled areas. On August 1, all walks of life in Yan 'an gathered to denounce the atrocities committed by the Kuomintang authorities and pay tribute to the dead martyrs. Mao Zedong delivered a speech at the meeting titled "Reactionaries must be punished", criticizing the crimes of Chiang Kai-shek and his followers. Commemorating the 8th anniversary of the 91st Incident and commemorating the martyrs killed in the Pingjiang Massacre on August 1, 1939, Xinhua Daily published Zhou Enlai's conversation with reporters to expose the truth of the tragedy and two protest telegrams to Chen Cheng
