Tan Zhenlin joined the Communist Party of China in 1926. After 1927, he served successively as the Special Committee of the Hunan-Jiangxi Border, the political commissar of the Second and Fourth Columns of the Fourth Red Army, and the political commissar of the 12th Army of the First Red Army. During the Long March in 1934, he stayed in western Fujian as military minister and vice chairman of the Military and Political Commission. During the Anti-Japanese War, he served as deputy commander and political commissar of the Third Detachment of the New Fourth Army, commander and political commissar of the Sixth Division of the New Fourth Army, political commissar of the Second Division of the New Fourth Army and secretary of the Party Committee of Huainan District.
