On this day, 92 years ago, on December 17, 1933 (November 1, 1933, the 13th Dalai Lama of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism in the Qing Dynasty passed away. In his later years, he felt deeply about the importance of safeguarding the reunification of the motherland and actively restored the relationship between Xizang and the central government. He is the one who has been in power for the longest time among successive Dalai Lama. He promoted the modernization of Xizang and hoped to give Xizang an independent status. He was the earliest promoter of the Xizang independence movement and had mixed praise in modern history. However, it is undeniable that he had a significant influence on modern Xizang history. During the Republic of China, Tudeng Gyatso continued the modernization process in Xizang since the late Qing Dynasty, reformed the monastery system, improved currency, postal, telecommunications facilities, etc., strengthened local military forces in Xizang, and established a Tibetan Medical Hospital. In 1919, after consultation, Tudeng Gyatso expressed his willingness to obey the Republican government. In the 1920s, Tudeng Gyatso repeatedly quelled the rebellion of pro-British forces in Xizang, closed the aristocratic school run by the British in Gyangz, and refused entry to British representatives. In 1920, in order to establish the army, the 13th Dalai Lama appointed Yongsha Dorjee and Luosang Tanyang to be in charge of the army's finances. They imposed heavy taxes on Tashilhunpo Monastery, which aroused dissatisfaction among the 9th Panchen Lama and caused the Panchen Lama to flee to Inner Mongolia in China. In 1929, the Nanjing National Government sent Liu Manqing to Lhasa to discuss Tibetan affairs.
