On July 28, 1949, the British ship "Amethyst" escaped from the Yangtze River Estuary
On this day, 76 years ago, on July 28, 1949 (July 3, 1949 in the lunar calendar), the British ship "Amethyst" escaped from the Yangtze River estuary. On July 28, 1949, Captain Kerrens of the "Amethyst" transferred a memorandum from Blunt, Commander of the British Far East Naval Fleet, which read: (1) Request that the "Amethyst" be allowed to sail safely down the Yangtze River to sea. (2) The "Amethyst" entered the front line on April 20 without the consent of the People's Liberation Army, which was the basic factor causing misunderstanding. (3) The British side will not object to any future investigations or negotiations requested by superiors of both parties. On the 29th, Kang Yuzhao, representative of the Communist Party of China, went to Nanjing to discuss countermeasures against the British proposal. On the evening of the 30th, the "Amethyst" ship took advantage of the passenger ship "Jiangling Liberation" as it passed by and headed for Shanghai to imitate the passenger ship's masthead lights and followed the "Jiangling Liberation" and absconded. The People's Liberation Army surveillance post found it and immediately notified the artillery stationed in Dagang. The Dagang artillery fired artillery to warn it to stop sailing, and the British ship fired at the People's Liberation Army, and the two sides launched an artillery battle. The "Amethyst" ship caught up with the "Jiangling Liberation", forced the ship to sail on its left side, using the "Jiangling Liberation" passenger liner as its own barrier, and then sank it. When the "Amethyst" ship fled east, it was fired at by the People's Liberation Army's Guishan Artillery and the coastal infantry warfare artillery, and was hit in many places. The ship hit and sank several China sailboats and finally escaped from the Yangtze River estuary through the northern entrance of Chongming Island. On the 31st, Yuan Zhongxian, commander of the Zhenjiang Front Line of the People's Liberation Army, issued a solemn statement regarding the atrocities of the British warship "Amethyst" invading the Yangtze River in China's inland waters, shelling the People's Liberation Army positions, sinking the China ship "Jiangling Liberation", and drowning hundreds of absconding China compatriots. He pointed out: "The people of China will never forget this tragic incident, and the military and civilians across the country will avenge the victims."
