On this day, 79 years ago, September 14, 1946 (August 19, 1946 in the lunar calendar), the France-Vietnam Provisional Agreement was signed. On September 14, 1946, the Pidour government of France and Pham Van Tong, Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, signed the "France-Vietnam Interim Agreement" on Fontainebleau, France, also known as the "September-14 Agreement." The main contents of the "September-14 Agreement" include: affirmation of the "France-Vietnam Preliminary Agreement" signed on March 6, 1946; both sides stop all hostilities and violent actions, and shall not arrest any French and Vietnamese people loyal to their country; Vietnam recognizes France's economic and cultural interests in Vietnam, and France respects the democratic and freedom rights of the people of southern Vietnam. However, the issues concerning the sovereignty of southern Vietnam and the diplomatic autonomy of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam remained unresolved, and negotiations were stipulated to continue before January 1947. In December 1946, France tore up the France-Vietnam Provisional Agreement.
