Twenty-six years ago today, on December 26, 1999 (November 19, 1999, the largest hydropower station in western my country), Ertan Hydropower Station, was fully completed and put into operation. On December 26, 1999, all six 550,000-kilowatt units of the Ertan Hydropower Station, the largest hydropower station in western my country, were completed and put into operation for power generation. The Yalong River, which has been unruly and rolling eastward for hundreds of millions of years, is turning into a powerful electric current that is sent to thousands of households. Ertan Hydropower Station is one of the key construction projects of the country during the Eighth Five-Year Plan. It is one of the largest, most technologically complex and investment-intensive infrastructure projects in western my country since the founding of the People's Republic of China. Ertan Hydropower Station consists of a 240-meter-high overflow concrete hyperbolic arch dam and a huge underground powerhouse and other buildings. The power station is equipped with 6 hydro-generator units with a single unit capacity of 550,000 kilowatts, with a total installed capacity of 3.3 million kilowatts, an average multi-year power generation capacity of 17 billion kilowatt hours, and a total project investment of 28.47 billion yuan. Ertan Hydropower Station carried out exploration and design work as early as the early 1970s, and the main project of the power station officially started in September 1991. All milestone goals set in the early stage of project construction have been achieved. The initial operation and monitoring data of the Ertan Project show that the project design is advanced, the construction quality is excellent, and the project performance meets the design requirements. During the construction of Ertan Hydropower Station, the enthusiasm of various contractors, equipment suppliers, and supervision engineers was fully mobilized, making this large-scale construction project involving more than 40 countries around the world, hundreds of engineering projects, and tens of thousands of people participated in the project. The contract period was completed 181 days ahead of schedule. The success of the Ertan Project marks that my country's hydropower construction level has reached a new level. As a result, Sichuan and Chongqing bid farewell to years of power shortage and laid the foundation for economic development in the next century.
