Qian weichang (1912.10.09-2010.07.30), native of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, the father of modern Chinese mechanics, a world-famous scientist and educator, an outstanding social activist, an outstanding leader of the China Democratic League, a close friend of the Communist Party of China, Vice Chairman of the Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and Ninth National Committees of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Vice Chairman of the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Central Committees of the China Democratic League, Seventh, Eighth, Honorary Chairman of the 9th Session, Senior Academician of China Academy of Sciences, President of Shanghai University, Nanjing University, Jinan University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Honorary President of Jiangnan University, Honorary President of Yaohua Middle School; Academician Qian Weichang is also a director of applied mathematics, physics, and Chinese informatics. Qian Weichang also serves as honorary president of Jinan University, Zhangzhou University, Shazhou Institute of Technology, and serves as honorary professor at Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Jiangsu University, Chengdu University of Electronic Science and Technology, Southwest Jiaotong University, Huaqiao University and other universities. He also serves as editorial board member of the American "Progress in Applied Mathematics","International Engineering Science Monthly","Finite Elements in Analysis and Design" in the Netherlands,"Thin-walled Components" in the UK, and "Applied Mechanics" in Ukraine; deputy editor-in-chief of "Encyclopedia of China"; Member of the Sino-US Joint Editorial Committee of the Chinese edition of Concise Encyclopedia Britannica; Deputy Editor of Cihai; Editor-in-chief of "Modernization Exploration Series" by Chongqing Press; editor-in-chief of "Applied Mathematics and Mechanics Series" by Science Press. Qian Weichang passed away due to illness in Shanghai at 6:20 on July 30, 2010 at the age of 98. Together with Qian Xuesen and Qian Sanqiang, Premier Zhou called them "three coins". On January 24, 2011, he won the 2010 China Education News Person of the Year Special Award. On February 14, 2011, he was awarded the top ten people touching China in 2010.
