Cousin of John Adams, the 2nd President of the United States. Born in Brentree, Massachusetts, his ancestral home in England, and his great-grandfather moved to North America in 1636. He received a good classical education when he was a child. He used to be a lawyer, but gradually became dissatisfied with the British Crown. He actively participated in revolutionary activities and was one of the founders and leaders of the Sons of Liberty. He opposed the Sugar Ordinance, the Stamp Duty Ordinance, and the Townsend Tax Law. He instigated the Boston Tea Party and shocked the United States. He was a delegate to two Continental Congresses, signed the Declaration of Independence, and participated in the drafting of the Confederation Constitution. In 1787, after the Shays Uprising broke out against the state government's indifference to the farmers, he supported James Bowden's severe suppression of the uprising. After the Constituent Convention, he wavered between the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists. He served as governor of Massachusetts from 1794 to 1797, and died in Boston in 1803.
