Huang Gonglue (January 24, 1898-September 15, 1931), formerly known as Chu, was born in Gaomuchong, Guihua Township, Xiangxiang County, Xiangtan, Hunan Province. He was a senior general of the Workers and Peasants Red Army of China. He joined the Hunan Army in 1916 and was admitted to the Hunan Army Lecture Hall in 1922. He graduated the following year and returned to the Hunan Army as company commander. Later, he joined the Second Army of the National Revolutionary Army with his troops. In 1926, he participated in the Northern Expedition and made military achievements. In the same year, he studied at the Whampoa Military Academy. In December 1927, he participated in the Guangzhou Uprising and joined the Communist Party of China. After the uprising failed, Huang Gonglue sneaked back to his hometown. In July 1928, he launched the Pingjiang Uprising with Peng Dehuai, Teng Daiyuan, Deng Ping and others and established the Fifth Red Army. In November, Peng, Teng and others led the main force of the Fifth Red Army to Jinggangshan. Huang Gonglue led the rest of his troops to persist in guerrilla warfare. In 1929, after the Fifth Red Army returned, he served as deputy commander of the Fifth Red Army and participated in the establishment of the Hunan-Hubei-Jiangxi Soviet Area. In January 1930, he was transferred to the commander of the Sixth Red Army and was responsible for opening up base areas in southwestern Jiangxi. Although he did not lead the main force of the Red Army, Huang Gonglue still achieved great success and laid the foundation for the establishment of the Central Soviet Area. Mao Zedong once praised him: "In the red corner of the Ganshui River, I rely on Huang Gonglue." In June 1930, he served as commander of the Red Army's First Red Army Corps and participated in the first anti-encirclement and suppression war of the Communist Party of China at the end of the year. In the Battle of Longgang, the Red Army participated as the main force. Later, he led his troops to participate in the second and third counter-encirclement and suppression wars, and participated in the Battle of Futian, the Battle of Laoyingpan, and the Battle of Fangshiling. On September 15, 1931, the Red Army Command was attacked by the National Revolutionary Army. Huang Gonglue died after being seriously injured. In memory of Huang Gonglue, the Communist Party of China named the newly established Second Infantry School as Gonglue Infantry School.
