On this day, 42 years ago, on June 11, 1983 (May 1, 1983 in the lunar calendar), painter Li Kuchan passed away. Li Kuchan's work "Eagle Stone Painting" Li Kuchan, formerly known as Li Ying, is an outstanding contemporary freehand flower-and-bird painter, calligrapher, and art educator of the people in my country. He was born on January 11, 1899 (November 30, 2009) in a poor peasant family in Liqizhuang, Gaotang County, Shandong Province. As a boy, under the influence of folk artists, he embarked on a difficult artistic journey. When he arrived in Beijing in 1919, he first entered the "Work-Study Program"(also known as the French Specialized Hall) attached to Peking University, and continued to study while working and studying. At the same time, he also learned sketching and Western painting from Mr. Xu Beihong at the "Amateur Painting Research Society" attached to Peking University. In 1920, he entered the Chinese Department of Peking University to study Chinese, and in 1922, he transferred to the Western Painting Department of the "Beijing National Art College" to study. During this period, he often relied on pulling rickshaw at night to make ends meet. To this end, classmate Lin Yilu gave him the name "bitter meditation"(suffering, that is, the experience of suffering; Zen, in ancient times, freehand painting was called Zen painting). In 1923, he became Qi Baishiweng's teacher. At this time, Qi Weng was still very famous, and in addition to the popularity of imitating the past in Beijing at that time, Qi Weng was the only one who pioneered a unique style and boldly innovated. Therefore, he was ridiculed. In 1925, he graduated from the "Beijing National Art College" and served as a professor at Beijing Normal School and concurrently as a professor at Baoding Second Normal School. In 1930, he was recruited to Hangzhou Art College as a professor of traditional Chinese painting. In the early days of the Anti-Japanese War, when Beijing fell, Mr. Li was extremely angry and resigned from all "public positions" and lived in seclusion at Laoye Temple in Qianmen and No. 2 Liushujing in Xicheng City. Because he had close interactions with patriots on weekdays, he was arrested and imprisoned in 1939, tortured and unyielding. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he was appointed as a professor at the Beijing National Art College in 1946. In 1949, after the liberation of Beijing, he was changed to a part-time professor. In 1950, Mr. Li wrote a letter to Chairman Mao requesting to arrange work. Chairman Mao immediately wrote to Dean Xu Beihong and sent his secretary to visit him. Immediately, Mr. Li was assigned to the "Central Academy of Fine Arts" as a researcher. Later, he was transferred to the Chinese Painting Department of the academy as a professor of freehand painting. During the Cultural Revolution, Mr. Li was brutally persecuted, falsely accused of being a "reactionary academic authority", imprisoned in a "cattle pen", subjected to various tortures, and later sent to rural labor. In 1972, the beloved Premier Zhou sent someone to invite an old painter to paint. Mr. Li was invited to participate. In three years, he painted more than 300 paintings for the country. After the Cultural Revolution, Mr. Li regained his reputation. He painted "The Picture of Blooming Red Plum","The Picture of Clear Snow", etc., and later served as a member of the "China Painting Research Institute", a director of the China Artists Association, and a member of the Fifth and Sixth National Committees of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. In 1981, he invested in the filming of scientific and educational films "China Flower and Bird Painting","Painted Eagle by Painted Zen" and "Painted Zen Freehand Painting", and put his life's valuable artistic experience on the screen without reservation and dedicated it to future generations. During this period, he created huge masterpieces such as "Ink Bamboo Painting" and "Summer Painting". In the spring of 1982, I visited the Guangdong Special Economic Zone and was very excited. I deeply felt the hope of China's revitalization and set up the ambition of creating hundreds of works. In the spring of 1983, relevant departments held a congratulatory conference for Professor Li Kuchan's sixty years of education. On June 8, he was invited to write a giant couplet for the Confucius Temple in Nagasaki, Japan: "The Holy One has no domain and no domain, and the virtuous one has a model." In August 1981, 84-year-old Li Kuchan was with his students and passed away at 1 a.m. on June 11, 1983.
