On this day, 27 years ago, on October 31, 1998 (September 12, 1998 in the lunar calendar), the maintenance project of Tiananmen Square started. The maintenance of Tiananmen Square can be regarded as the largest renovation of the year. On October 31, 1998, the large-scale maintenance and renovation project of Tiananmen Square was officially launched. In May 1999, the newly laid light pink granite floor, bright and comfortable lights, and the added green space will decorate Tiananmen Square more magnificent. Tiananmen Square, which has attracted worldwide attention, will welcome the 50th birthday of the Republic with a new look. According to Xia Shangwu, director of the Tiananmen Management Committee, Tiananmen Square underwent major maintenance and renovation during the founding ceremony in 1949. On the 10th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the red walls on both sides of the square were removed to further expand Tiananmen Square, and the Great Hall of the People and Revolutionary History Museum were built. After 1976, Tiananmen Square underwent major changes and the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall was built. Up to now, various facilities in Tiananmen Square have shown functional aging. Every year, 20% to 30% of the damage to the square tiles on the ground in Tiananmen Square needs to be repaired. At present, damage to square bricks on the ground can be seen everywhere, some ground sinks and water accumulates in rainy days. In addition, the sound reinforcement system in Tiananmen Square is still electronic tube equipment built in 1959, and the sound is distorted. The brightness and uniformity of the lighting are not good, and the glare is dazzling. The main contents of this Tiananmen Square maintenance and renovation project include: laying bricks on the ground, improving lighting, adding green spaces, updating the sound reinforcement system, and renovating and repairing the underground pipe network. The 150,000-square-meter cement square bricks in the renovated Tiananmen Square will be replaced with light pink natural granite. The brightness and uniformity of square lighting will increase, and other buildings in Tiananmen Square will also be replaced with flood lighting. The distorted and aging sound reinforcement system will be updated and renovated. The green area will increase. During the Tiananmen Square improvement project, the daily flag-raising ceremony in the square will continue as usual. The people watching the ceremony will be temporarily moved to the pedestrian trail on the north side of Chang 'an Street and in front of the Jinshui Bridge. The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall will continue to be open if possible, and the visit to the Monument to the People's Heroes will be suspended. It is reported that the Tiananmen Square reconstruction project implements an owner responsibility system, and the entire project adopts a bidding method for procurement, construction, and supervision.
