On this day, 56 years ago, on December 2, 1969 (October 23, 1969 in the lunar calendar), Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union Voroshilov passed away. Kliment Evremovich Voroshilov (1881 - 1969), Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the former Soviet Union. Born in the village of Virkhniye, Bakhmutssk District, Yekaterinoslav Province. Worked as an apprentice in a metallurgical factory. In 1898, a social democratic revolutionary group was organized in the factory. In 1903, he joined the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party. He participated in leading the strike movement in Ukraine from 1905 to 1907. He worked underground from 1908 to 1917 and was imprisoned and exiled many times. Participated in the February Revolution and October Revolution. After the October Revolution, he served as a member of the People's Committee of Petrograd City, and together with Dzerzhinsky, he formed the All-Russian Committee for the Suppression of Counter-Terrorism. During the Civil War, he served as commander of the 10th Army of the Red Army and commander of the front line of Chalijin. From 1921 to 1924, he served as commander of the North Caucasus Military Region and commander of the Moscow Military Region. From 1925 to 1934, he served as People's Commissar of the Army and Navy of the Soviet Union and Chairman of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Soviet Union. From 1934 to 1940, he served as People's Commissar for National Defense of the Soviet Union. In 1935, he was awarded the title of Marshal of the Soviet Union. After 1940, he served as Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of the Soviet Union and Chairman of the People's Committee for National Defense. During the Patriotic War, he served as a member of the National Defense Commission, commander-in-chief of the Northwest Front Army, commander-in-chief of the Leningrad Front, and commander-in-chief of the guerrillas. In 1945, he served as chairman of the Allied Commission for Control of Hungary. In March 1946, he served as Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union. From March 1953 to May 1960, he served as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. He was a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (Bolshevik)(1926 - 1952) and a member of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1952 - 1960). In October 1961, at the 22nd National Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, he was not elected to the Central Committee due to "supporting anti-party group activities." In April 1966, he was re-elected as a member of the Central Committee at the 23rd National Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He visited China from April to May 1957. He died of illness on December 2, 1969.
