On September 18, 1982, Pei Wenzhong, the founder of Paleolithic archaeology and Quaternary mammal in China, the main founder of paleoanthropology in China, and the first discoverer of the skull of Peking Man, died in Beijing at the age of 79. Pei Wenzhong graduated from the Department of Geology of Peking University and received a doctorate from the University of Paris. On December 2, 1929, he discovered the first skull fossil of Peking Man dating back to 500,000 years in a natural ancient cave in Zhoukoudian, about 50 kilometers southwest of Beijing.
