Breaking-News >> TodayHistory June 21, 1939 Chaoshan fell
On this day, 86 years ago, on June 21, 1939 (May 5, 1939, the lunar calendar), Chaoshan fell. The Japanese invaders swaggered around on the Guangji Bridge in Chaozhou. On June 29, 1939, Chenghai County was occupied by the Japanese invaders. On June 21, 1939, the Japanese army landed in Shantou from the Meixi River area: at dawn on June 21, the Japanese army troops, the Southern Branch Naval Force commanded by Lieutenant General Kondo, raided Shantou in Lianggang, southern China. After a general sweep, they completely occupied Shantou at 11 p.m. that day. The irrefutable evidence of the Japanese invaders 'atrocities is overwhelming. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the victory of the China People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Seventy years ago, after arduous and bloody battles, the China people defeated the vicious Japanese militarist invaders and won the first complete victory in China's resistance to foreign invasion in modern times. This great victory established a historical turning point for the Chinese nation to move from deep crisis in modern times to great rejuvenation. Bearing in mind history and not forgetting national humiliation is to remember the martyrs, cherish peace, and embrace the future. Starting from today, the editorial department of Shantou Daily has carefully planned and launched a series of special topics such as "Opening the Dusted Memories-Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Victory of the China People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression: Archives of the Anti-Japanese War", which will be divided into chapters such as "The Fall of Chaoshan","The Fall of Nan'ao","The Fall of Shantou","The Fall of Chaozhou","The Fall of Chenghai","The Fall of Haifeng","The Fall of Chaoyang","The Fall of Jieyang, Puning, and Huilai", and "The Song of Fighting the Enemy". A comprehensive playback of the national hatred and family hatred that was devastated by the invaders. It is worth mentioning that the pictures and materials about the Japanese aggression against Chaoshan displayed this time are all exclusively provided by the Central Archives, Shantou University Library, and Shan Tou City Archives. Among them, some of the photos were provided to the Shan Tou City Archives by Li Minghua, deputy director of the Central Archives and deputy director of the State Archives Bureau, during his recent visit to Shantou for research. There are many crimes and ironclad evidence. These precious information photos truly record the heinous crimes of the Japanese invaders invading Chaoshan land at that time. They are the first time in history that they have been publicly disclosed in Shantou media. On August 31, 1937, two Japanese military aircraft invaded the skies over Shantou, Chenghai and Chaoan for reconnaissance and began the invasion of Chaoshan. From that day on, Japanese aircraft continued to bomb Chaoshan towns, and Japanese warships frequently attacked and harassed merchant ships and fishing boats in the Chaoshan waters. On June 21, 1938, the Japanese Navy occupied Nan'ao Island under the cover of warships and aircraft. The Chaoshan garrison and the Anti-Japanese People's Self-Defense Organization "Volunteer Army" crossed the sea to fight against the Japanese army and recovered Nan'ao on July 16. At the end of July, the Japanese army reoccupied Nan'ao and used it as a base to launch the battle of occupying Chaoshan. On June 6, 1939, the Japanese army issued an order to capture Shan Tou City and Chaozhou City in order to realize its plan to blockade the South China coast. On the 21st, Shantou fell. On the 27th, the Japanese army occupied Chaozhou. On the 29th, the Japanese army that occupied Shantou moved from Chaozhou to Chenghai along the Han River. At this point, the estuaries of Hanjiang, Rongjiang and Lianjiang were controlled by the Japanese army. From the summer of 1940 to 1943, with the changes in the Japanese government's policy of aggression against China and the increase and decrease of the number of troops stationed in Shantou, the Japanese army invaded Chaoshan militarily focused mainly on consolidating the occupied area and blocking the coastal areas, while adopting encroaching tactics towards the Chaoshan hinterland, occupying one township and one town. On March 24, 1941, more than a thousand Japanese troops landed in Haifeng in three routes. Haifeng County Haicheng and Shanwei were captured that day. At the end of 1943, Chaoyang County and Huayang, Sangtian, Haimen, and Heping, the Dajing, Nanlong, Shuanggang, and Qiangang lines in Jieyang, Guantang, Tiepu, and Xikou in Chao'an, the entire territory of Chenghai County, Longdu in Raoping, Zhelin, Haishan and other coastal areas all fell. From 1944 to 1945, Jieyang Rongcheng, Puning, Huilai and other places also fell one after another.
